The Loud and Reckless Years

Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes has established a reputation for his hard and fast life.

Living on the edge for most of his 35-year musical career, fuelled by a cocktail of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

In recent years, he put a stop to his loud and reckless life. He went into rehab and consciously started re-moulding himself into a responsible family man.

But earlier this year, Jimmy was rushed to hospital for double heart surgery.

For the first time in his career he was forced to rest. Not an easy feat! Bed bound for months, he was further forced to evaluate his life.

He picked up a guitar and started writing music, in bed while his chest healed.

Next month he will release his first album in seven years with original new material, written during that time.

A more mellow, softer sounding Jimmy has emerged. Songs are more earthy, and even country sounding.

The album, titled Out in the Blue, is the most complete musical biography of his life to date.

He credits his wife, Jane, for pulling him 'out of the blue' and for putting him back on track to a sober and responsible life.

His five children are all adults now (including established singer David Campbell from a previous relationship), and have all forged their own musical careers.

These days he regularly works alongside them, recording and touring with them and mentoring them.

Jimmy Barnes has also started a new career as a presenter on a pay TV music program.

SUNDAY caught up with Jimmy to catch up on his latest projects, and a look at his colourful life.

Out in the Blue is released on 24 November.
