The Gift of Sight
July 20, 2008

shoeWatch our report

Reporter: Heather Stewart

It’s said “the eyes are the window to the soul”. East Timor’s soul has been darkened with centuries of occupation, violence and unrest and an alarming rate of preventable blindness due to an incapacitated and inept health care system.

Yet working tirelessly behind this chaotic scene is a visionary Australian, Dr Nitin Verma, who’s simple dream is to help the fledgling nation eradicate preventable blindness by the year 2020.

Heather Stewart travelled to Dili Hospital where she witnessed the miracle of sight being restored by his team of Australian volunteers.

Images from this story have been compiled into a book. Saving Sight, Saving a Nation is on sale now for $69.95 and proceeds from every book sold will go directly to help save the sight the Timorese.
